Why Stay in Toastmasters?
By: Michelle Hanchey, DTM/PRM 2017-18
You’ve broken through your fear of public speaking. In fact, you might even enjoy speaking and getting pretty good at it; even your audiences think so.
You may have been asking yourself, “Why renew my membership?”
While Toastmasters is often touted and even marketed as a place to overcome the fear of public speaking, those Toastmasters who leave miss opportunities.
Here are just five opportunities you may have not thought about.
- Toastmasters is a place to hone your abilities in a safe environment, where the outcome doesn’t end in, “You’re fired!”
- Your club is your laboratory where you can experiment with new material, new medium like Webinars, as well as delivery.
- Toastmasters provides a place to practice in front of a sympathetic audience and to receive feedback from people who want to help you.
- Toastmasters is where leaders are made. Here you can expand your repertoire of skills into leadership in a non-profit or other organization. Leadership is refined by learning how to motivate others.
- There is a plethora of skills you can hone: from meeting planning from groups of 20 at your club; to club officer training for 100-300; or even multi-day conferences for 200-400 with meals and a banquet.
